They are very small pests, also known as ectoparasites. Some species can just barely be seen with the naked eye, while others are so tiny that only a microscope can reveal them. Therefore, it is important to watch for their traces, as these often are the only indicators of a mite infestation.

Skin and coat problems are signs, as mites primarily feed on the host’s dead skin cells. The affected body area of the cat varies depending on the type of mite. Some live on sparsely haired areas, while others reside within the skin or fur.

Caution: Risk of infection!

Mites are primarily a danger to outdoor cats. If your pet roams through meadows or visits the neighbor’s cat, it can become infected and bring the unpleasant pests home with it.

Some types of mites are not limited to dogs. They can also be transmitted to humans. The sooner you detect and treat an infestation, the faster you can get rid of these pests and your furry friend can go exploring without unwanted guests and itching.

Mite infestation: recognizing the symptoms

The symptoms of a mite infestation can vary. However, severe itching, which manifests itself in frequent scratching, is common. If the cat is not treated, the small parasites can spread unhindered, leading to dandruff, papules, pustules, crusting, and bald spots.

The longer the animal has to live with the mites, the more extensive the infestation becomes. The suffering increases and other diseases can also develop as a result.

Common symptoms:

intense itching

Redness

Scales, papules, pustules, scabs

Hair loss

The Little Cat Mite Encyclopedia

Since mite species differ slightly in their behavior and characteristics, you first need to know exactly which pest you are dealing with. In cats, it is likely to be:

Nose mites/ear mites

Fur mites

Notoedres mites

(Autumn) grass mites

Hair follicle mites (Demodex mites) and burrowing mites are rare in cats.

Ear mites/biting mites

These mites infest the outer ear canal of cats and dogs. They are easily identified by the brown, coffee-ground-like deposits in the ear. The mites themselves appear as small black dots. Symptoms of ear mites:

intense itching

shaking one’s head

brownish-black crumbly secretion

Inflammation in the ears

Fur mites

These mites live, as the name suggests, in the cat’s fur and belong to the predatory mites. They are recognizable as small white dots, which makes them hard to distinguish from the flaky skin they cause. They can be transmitted to dogs, and the animals often infect each other. Symptoms of fur mites:

intense itching

flaky skin

Scratching

Notoedres mites

This type of mite occurs predominantly in cats. Only in rare cases does it jump to other pets or humans. However, it is highly contagious among cats. Mainly affected are the face, neck, and ears. Sometimes the mites also infest the paws and other body areas. Symptoms of Notoedres mites:

intense itching

Scaly, crusty skin changes, especially on the face, neck, and ears

vigorous scratching

Skin infections

(Autumn) grass mites

Especially in early and late summer, these mites are active and infest cats and dogs. The animals do not infect each other; instead, they bring the parasites home from walks through grassy areas. Therefore, low-lying body regions, such as paws, belly, and chest, are particularly affected. However, only the larval stage is parasitic. The larvae feed on the cat for a few days and then fall to the ground as adult mites. Symptoms of (autumn) grass mites:

intense itching

especially on the paws, belly, and chest

characteristic orange-colored larvae

When to go to the vet?

Is your cat scratching constantly? Do you notice skin changes or a coffee-ground-like residue in the ears? Then you should promptly consult your trusted veterinarian. They can investigate the suspected mite infestation and determine which species of mites is involved.

Many types of mites can be detected with a superficial skin scraping or a sticky tape preparation. For ear mites, the veterinarian takes a swab from the ears. Only if hair follicle mites are suspected is a deep skin scraping, a squeeze or sticky tape preparation, and an examination of the hair roots from plucked hairs necessary.

Treating mites correctly – according to the vet

The examination results serve as the basis for treatment determined by the veterinarian. In cases of mild infestation, sometimes treating the itch with a natural preparation is sufficient. If your cat suffers from a persistent infestation, corticosteroid creams and injections are often required. Ear mites can be effectively eliminated with topical medications.

Inflammation caused by mites can be treated with antibacterial agents.

Important note: If you have multiple cats and dogs, all animals should be examined to detect and prevent transmission in time.

Sustainable cleaning of your home

The fight against mites goes beyond your beloved cat. Thoroughly clean everything your cat comes into contact with. This includes the home, the sleeping area, the carrier, and the car. Blankets, cushions, and brushes must also be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly.

If you forget this step, your furry friend may become infected with mites again or even transmit them to another pet or even to humans. It is best to ask your veterinarian how you can rid your home of mites. This is because each type of mite is slightly different.

How can I prevent mites in my cat?

There are ways to get ahead of these tiny pests. With good prevention, you actively contribute to your cat’s health. It all starts with a healthy and balanced diet, as it strengthens the immune system.

If your cat has just been outside and wandered through a meadow, thorough combing also helps. Additionally, natural products are beneficial. But keep in mind: prevention is no guarantee that your cat will never get mites. However, the risk is significantly reduced. If your cat is prone to mite infestations, consult your veterinarian for appropriate prophylaxis.

Natural mite and flea prevention for cats: “Krabbelstop”

„Krabbelstop“ is our natural classic for mite and flea prevention and can support treatment during an acute mite infestation.

If you would like to use Krabbelstop to treat a mite infestation, please consult your veterinarian first.
