Detecting eye problems in horses at an early stage

Flies, dust, or drafts can irritate the eyes of your horse. The conjunctiva becomes red, and in most cases, increased eye discharge occurs. Because irritated eyes often itch strongly, the horse tries to rub its eye to find relief.

If you notice increased eye discharge, it does not always have to be caused by irritation. Conjunctivitis or a foreign body in the eye are also possible.

Watch out for these symptoms:

red and/or swollen conjunctiva
increased eye discharge (clear and watery, mucous, or white to yellowish)
dark crusts in the corner of the eye
rubbing of the eye
squinting
sensitivity to light

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it is best to have a veterinarian take a look. They can make a diagnosis and explain the appropriate treatment. Discuss with your vet whether you can use “Sternenglanz” eye care as supportive treatment.
