How to recognize ear mites in horses

Ear mites cause the so-called ear mange. They infest the auricle and the outer ear canal. There are several genera that focus on the ears, including Psoroptes, Otodectes, and Chorioptes.

You can recognize ear mites in horses by the characteristically dry skin. Additionally, the affected areas are very sensitive, and the horse avoids touch. Frequent head shaking and occasional tilting of the head can indicate the presence of these small parasites. To relieve the itchiness, the animals may also rub against objects.

Symptoms of ear mites:

dry and touch-sensitive skin
(frequent) head shaking
tilting of the head
rubbing against objects

What to do about ear mites in horses?

If you suspect ear mites, consult your veterinarian so they can make a reliable diagnosis. Ear mites can be identified with an otoscope as dark spots in the ear canal. A swab from the ear is taken to determine the exact type of mite. Afterwards, the veterinarian can recommend an appropriate treatment to eliminate the mites.

Prevent properly and give ear mites no chance

Ohrmilben und Milben allgemein befinden sich eigentlich auf jedem Pferd. Es ist jedoch vom Tier abhängig, ob sie aktiv werden. Ist die Haut jedoch nicht intakt oder das Immunsystem durch einen Infekt geschwächt, lassen Parasiten nicht lange auf sich warten.

Achten Sie daher auf eine gesunde und hochwertige Ernährung Ihres Pferdes. Eine ausreichende Zinkzufuhr ist wichtig für die Barrierefunktion der Haut. Außerdem benötigen die unteren Hautschichten Mangan, Kupfer und Kobalt.
