Recognizing mites and fleas

If your cat brings fleas or mites home after a stroll through the garden, the main symptom is itching. The cat will scratch frequently and appear generally restless. Depending on the severity of the infestation, the following symptoms may be observed:

Skin redness, pustules, papules, scabs
Dandruff
Hair loss
Coffee grounds-like deposits in the ears

Since cat fleas feel very comfortable in warm, moist fur, they lay about 20 to 30 eggs per day. These can spread throughout your entire home. Since they also jump, other cats in the household can quickly become infected. The blood-sucking insects’ saliva causes severe itching and can lead to skin inflammation and allergic reactions. They also serve as intermediate hosts for tapeworms. This makes it all the more important to react quickly.

Taking the right action against mites and fleas

If you suspect that your furry friend is infested with these tiny pests, take a close look inside their ears and use a flea comb to identify them. In animals with light-colored fur, it is possible to see fleas on the skin.
