Mauke is a painful pastern dermatitis, a skin inflammation in the area of the pasterns. Most often, it is a mixed infection caused by bacteria. It begins at the pastern joints with skin redness, which, if left untreated, develops into eczema with crusts, thickening, or cracks. The areas may ooze and become easily inflamed. Due to intense itching, the horse often stamps, rubs its legs, or gnaws at them. In the further course, lameness may occur, and growths can develop that bleed and exude foul-smelling discharge. In advanced cases, it can eventually lead to severe Mauke – tissue is destroyed, and necrosis forms. Watch out for these symptoms: • restless pawing, stamping, and sudden twitching of the legs • rubbing the legs and gnawing at the legs • redness in the pastern area • crusts, thickening, cracks • oozing and inflamed areas • growths • blood and strongly smelling discharge If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it is best to consult your veterinarian, who can make a diagnosis and explain the appropriate therapy to you.

Several factors can contribute to the development of Mauke. The horse may have a congenital susceptibility to eczema. But the environment also plays a role: moisture, wetness, and dirt promote Mauke. Therefore, it occurs more frequently during the winter months. Horses with long feathering on the pasterns, such as draft horses and Friesians, are particularly affected.
